The foreign secretary, Jeremy Hunt, has admitted article 50 may have to be extended to avoid the UK crashing out of the EU without a deal on 29 March. The government has consistently ruled out seeking an extension and on Tuesday whipped its MPs to vote down an amendment to ask for a delay.
